Allegheny National Forest Region
Warren, Tionesta and Cooksburg region
The Allegheny National Forest sits in the rugged plateau country of northwestern Pennsylvania. Many creeks and streams cut deeply into the plateau, creating a rolling and sometimes steep topography with a 1,300 foot range of elevation. The terrain is covered with a typical eastern hardwood forest: Black cherry, yellow poplar, white ash, red maple, and sugar maple are all common to the area. The Tionesta and Research Natural Areas and Hearts Content Area feature some of the oldest and largest tracts of virgin beech-hemlock forest in the eastern United States. The Allegheny River Islands Wilderness is another unique feature of the Allegheny National Forest. The seven islands in the Allegheny River offer remote canoeing and back-country camping.

Pittsburgh, PA 15238

Map it
Hartwood is a 629 acre park now owned and operated by Allegheny County. Hartwood was originally built as an equestrian estate. The Tudor Mansion, stable complex and gate lodge were designed by Alfred Hopkins and built for John and Mary Flinn Lawrence in 1929. Today, Hartwood has an outdoor amphitheater on the western side of the property, and the horse trails are still used for riding, in addition to walking. There are no picnic groves or other recreational and sports facilities--this is a park that provides cultural services to people who might not otherwise experience them.

Erie, Pennsylvania's beautiful Presque Isle peninsula, which juts into the clear, fresh waters of Lake Erie, is Pennsylvania's only "seashore," and is the site of Presque Isle State Park, the state's most visited park. The seven miles of sandy, guarded, bathing beaches, separated by natural wooded areas, were ranked among the "top 100" American "swimming holes," by the Conde Nast raveler magazine. A 13-mile multipurpose trail -- designated a National Recreation Trail and a part of "Seaway Trail Pennsylvania," following the Pennsylvania Lake Erie coastline -- is popular for biking, walking, running, in-line skating and birding.
